Asheville Nonprofit Receives First-of-Its-Kind Award

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — A female-owned local nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting adults with disabilities has been honored with the first-ever "Integration Innovation Award."

The Asheville-based Open Hearts Art Center received the award Thursday morning from Vaya Health, an organization that manages healthcare services for individuals with behavioral health needs.

"We are celebrating all of our accomplishments and our growth and creativity and the passion and just overcoming all the obstacles that have happened recently in Western North Carolina," said Debbie Harris, the nonprofit's co-founder and director of arts and events.

The Open Hearts Art Center provides individuals with intellectual developmental disabilities the opportunity to learn painting, drawing, ceramics, music, drama and dance.
