Direct Support Professional

I am originally from West Des Moines, Iowa, and I have been in Asheville now for over five years. I feel as though I have truly found my home in the mountains, though I do find plenty of inspiration from the midwestern landscape I grew up with. I have always enjoyed creating art, no matter what form it may take. I was never particularly drawn to formal art classes, and because of that, I never thought that I would be able to support myself as an artist. I believe that absolutely anyone can be an artist and everyone’s art is worth sharing. The way I create has always been deeply therapeutic, and I am passionate about encouraging others to express themselves on paper. I studied art history at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, and I am heavily inspired by both Medieval and Surrealist art. I wanted to be a writer when I was much younger, and I tend to incorporate poetry in my paintings and drawings, whether the words are the centerpiece of the creation, hidden completely, or written on the back of the canvas. I am inspired to create and challenge myself every day at Open Hearts Art Center. I have found such true fulfillment in creating art alongside the amazing artists, as well as my incredible peers.
